Assisting Special Needs Adults

Mariah Lossing (Cezanne’s mom) is accepting adult volunteers for her special needs classroom.  Her classes are held Monday - Wednesday in three two-hour blocks—9-11, 11-1, and 1-3—at the Austin Community College Highland Business Campus in front of Highland Mall.  Volunteers are welcome to come for two hours or more as often as they'd like. Volunteers do not need to have experience working with special needs adults or experience teaching; volunteers just need to be willing to be patient and learn a little about the community. Mariah works with a variety of special needs adults in her classroom, from autism, down syndrome, and traumatic brain injury to high-functioning mentally impaired people—a fantastic group of people.  For more info on the program or on how to contact Mariah directly, please go to follow this link. Volunteers are welcome to contact her directly to see if they are a good fit and to set up a time.

Zilker Perserve Restoration

From their website - http://www.zilker.ecotx.org :
"The purpose of this project is to improve the state of the Zilker Preserve by removing the severe threat of invasive plant species from all 60 acres of urban forest. This will be achieved by holding a few workdays a month, during which enthusiastic volunteers from the Austin community will physically remove invasive plant species from the surrounding area. These workdays, which will be held on Saturday mornings, will be extremely beneficial to the native plant and animal species that depend on the preserve for a nurturing habitat. Additionally, they will decrease the cost of damage caused by invasive species, and will also give local community members the opportunity to get involved in a wonderful cause. The project will make it easy for ordinary people to make a difference in Austin by reducing the environmental, economic, and public health threats posed by invasive plant species. The project will be led by EcoTexas, with the help of local groups including the City of Austin, Parks and Recreation Department, the Austin Parks Foundation, and Keep Austin Beautiful."
